9.Energy Consumption Measurements

The measurement’s purpose is to determine the energy consumption per use and form of energy as well as the factors affecting this consumption.

After identifying the building’s functions, the main energy consumers (lighting, air conditioning, heating, movement, etc.) are identified. The most efficient way of measurement is chosen so that the results can give a reliable energy balance that includes the participation of each use in the total energy consumption. This can be done using energy analyzers, instant measurements or even with permanent meters installed in the distribution sub-tables of the electricity. Accordingly, fuel consumptions can be measured, as well as characteristics of the building that affect energy consumption and therefore energy efficiency. Such characteristics are the thermal transmittance of the shell and the building’s frames (which can be measured with a thermal camera), the condition in the heating and air-conditioning pipes’ insulations (also shown using an thermal camera), the quality of the lighting in specific spaces (lux meter/ light meter), etc.

Critical additional parameters are the points where electricity measurements will be performed, the points where fuel measurements will be performed, the points where Solar Energy measurements will be performed and how the measurements are to be conducted (equipment, measurement period, collection frequency of values, etc.).
